Quotes:

Jacqui, I saw you at TJ High School a couple of weeks ago, and am impressed with both your passion for the electives and your knowledge of DPS. I was inspired by your affect and your communication style. What I hear from others is concern that you are all about art/music/PE, and after that there is no substance. That was NOT my impression after I heard you. I know absolutely nothing about political campaign strategies, but the folks I've talked with would more likely be swayed if they were as aware of the broad knowledge base you conveyed at the TJ forum.

Thank you for your commitment, congratulations on bringing such important issues into the discussion, and best of luck to you.

Hal Goldberg, Psychologist

In my 10 years teaching adults who had dropped out of school and then returned to complete their high school diploma requirements, I found that a major reason many had dropped out was because they felt there was no program that made them feel they belonged. Therefore, school was too painful for them to continue. They cited that the specific offerings lacking were one of the following: music, art, drama, and physical sports. We need to keep these programs so that our students have a reason to stay in school.

Coach Stacy Fowler, M.S., C.P.T.
President, Colorado Governor's Council for Physical Fitness 2000-2009

"I question the efficacy of putting so much emphasis on high stakes testing and the mind set that 'all children need to go to college.' All kids need some preparation after high school, but they don't all need a four year college degree. Instead, education at all school levels should become more authentic. The majority of classes, particularly at the secondary level, are highly theoretical; there is little or no application in real situations of the knowledge being learned in the classroom. Take a lesson from Career and Technical Education and add a practical, authentic component to the curriculum. This can occur by using the resources of your community to provide the reality-based experience for kids. This will prepare students to use what they learned in school, not just remember what they learned in school"

"An Apple a Day Is Not Enough" is a powerful poem written and performed by Taylor Mali (a well-known spoken word artist and teacher) about the importance of health education.
